Legal Specialist
 
Job Summary – The Legal Specialist is responsible for assisting SSC Senior Counsel or Collections Director and Executive Management and for working at the direction of SSC Senior Counsel to develop work plans and organize and manage the legal activities of the SSC

Duties (included but not limited to):   
 
 Consults with SSC Senior Counsel to coordinate and implement policies and procedures, special projects, and to track results.  
 
 Reviews contracts and writes demand letters for SSC under direction of SSC Senior Counsel.
 
 Works assigned pools and updates notes in various SSC computer systems. 
 
 Monitors high dollar unpaid, underpaid and denied accounts for proper escalation for legal review.
 
 Contacts insurance companies (in writing, on the phone and/or electronically) to escalate and resolve claim payments for unpaid, underpaid and denied accounts that are escalated by other SSC departments.
 
 Provides legal support for all procedures within the SSC.
 
 Utilizes the Legal Review Tool to track legal collection activities and prepare reports as requested by SSC Senior Counsel or the Collections Director.
 
 Assists with tracking and reporting monthly legal collections to SSC Executives and Parallon BPG leadership.
 
 Oversees the hospital lien process for court recording and satisfaction, as requested by SSC Senior Counsel.
 
 Consults with Workers Compensation representatives to ensure proper adherence to applicable state law and our policies and procedures, as requested by SSC Senior Counsel.
 
 Works on special projects related to re-pricers, silent PPO’s and other third- party issues, as requested by SSC Senior Counsel.
 
 Provides format for obtaining third-party liability information for liens and workers compensation claims , as requested by SSC Senior Counsel.
 
 Consolidates claims for insurance carries in receivership or reorganization as requested by Parallon BPG. (if applicable)
 
 Under direction of SSC Senior Counsel, prepares training materials and assist with legal training for SSC staff on relevant legal issues.
 
 Manages/assigns all billing records subpoenas for deposition and trial served at facilities and SSC, as requested by SSC Senior Counsel. Manages/assigns all interpleaders and petitions for equitable distribution served at facilities and SSC, as requested by SSC Senior Counsel
 
 Reviews objections to estate claims, as requested by SSC Senior Counsel. Provides litigation support to HCA corporate legal and outside counsel, as requested by SSC Senior Counsel. Acts as a team player, accepting job responsibilities willingly and proactively initiates assistance to other legal team members.
 
 Adheres to all SSC policies relating to attendance, tardiness, compliance and confidentiality.  
 
 Attends department meetings and provides insight on legal issues.
 
 Demonstrates current knowledge of legal issues and federal regulations regarding financial operations.
 
 Follow up on General Execution Docket for hospital liens and judgment liens obtained by agency attorneys, as requested by SSC Senior Counsel
 
 Practice and adhere to the "Code of Conduct" philosophy and "Mission and Value Statement"
 
 Other duties as assigned
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES  
 
Communication - communicates clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing. This includes utilizing proper punctuation, correct spelling and the ability to transcribe accurately.
 
Customer/Payer orientation - establishes and maintains long-term customer/payer relationships, building trust and respect by consistently meeting and exceeding expectations
 
Interpersonal skills - able to work effectively with other employees, patients and external parties
 
PC skills - demonstrates proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, and other programs and applications as required
 
Policies & Procedures - demonstrates knowledge and understanding of organizational policies, procedures and systems
 
Technical skills - professional presentation skills needed to represent facilities in legal issues.
 
Basic skills - able to perform basic mathematical calculations, balance and reconcile figures, punctuate properly, spell correctly and transcribe accurately and excel proficiency.

Job Requirements

EDUCATION  
 
Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Equivalent work experience may substitute for education requirements.
 
EXPERIENCE  
 
Minimum two years of legal, collections and/or healthcare experience preferred.
