Job Summary – The Assistant Controller is responsible for performing duties as assigned while in training at the SSC with primary focus on the Accounting and Financial Analysis departments, at the direction of the SSC CFO, to ensure that it is providing effective and efficient service to the operating groups and other customers, that employees are fully supported, and that the group improves its performance. This individual will assist the CFO, Controller, and Financial Analysis Director in developing/compiling/analyzing statistical data, identifying trends, formulating conclusions and preparing complete and accurate financial and statistical reports. The Assistant Controller must display competency in all of the major areas of the SSC and is expected to accept Interim Manager/Director assignments as needed.

Supervises – various individuals as assigned

Duties (included but not limited to):
• Demonstrates high level of proficiency and knowledge in Accounting and Financial Analysis functions and responsibilities
• Supports and coordinates work performed by SSC Accounting and Financial Analysis staffs that includes all aspects related to the month end close cycle as well as annual reporting for service center entities
• Assists Controller/CFO in preparation of annual budget and related analysis for service center ledgers
• Ensures that policy & procedures are updated and maintained to reflect current work requirements for departments that report to Controller and Financial Analysis Director
• Assists Controller to ensure SOX requirements within the Accounting, Cashiering and Patient Day Reconciliation departments’ scope are adhered to on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.
• Ensure compliance with government reporting requirements, including tax reports and payments
• Provide the SSC CFO , Controller and Financial Analysis Director with financial reports according to corporate policy
• Provide assistance to all management staff related to the performance of financial management matters
• Practice and adhere to the “Code of Conduct” philosophy and “Mission and Value Statement”
• Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

• Technical Expertise – Some understanding of healthcare including knowledge of healthcare terms and revenue cycle management as well as accounting theories of depreciation, prepaids, allocation methodologies and inter-company transactions.
• Leadership - Guides individuals and groups toward desired outcomes, setting high performance standards and delivering leading quality services
• Tactical execution - oversees the development, deployment and direction of complex programs and processes
• Financial Analysis Skills – knowledge of research techniques sufficient to collect and interpret data. Knowledge of descriptive statistics to analyze statistical data and prepare projections. Skill in interpreting and analyzing data and quantitative metrics for correctness and accuracy. Ability to apply business intelligence strategies to convert business cases into solutions. Knowledge of legal and fiscal requirements and regulations.

• Organization - proactively prioritizes needs and effectively manages resources
• Communication - communicates clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing. This includes utilizing proper punctuation, correct spelling and the ability to transcribe accurately. The ability to communicate with staff, Parallon Management, Division and Group Executives
• Customer orientation - establishes and maintains long-term customer relationships, building trust and respect by consistently meeting and exceeding expectations
• Interpersonal skills - able to work effectively with other employees, patients and external parties
• PC skills - demonstrates proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and others as required

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, or Finance required.

• Minimum three years’ experience in Accounting required. Direct experience in general Hospital Finance/Accounting and Hospital Net Revenue Analysis preferred
• Minimum two years of management experience preferred
• Experience in healthcare provider business office operations, especially billing and collections, preferred
• Relevant education may substitute experience requirement with SSC Executive approval

CERTIFICATE/LICENSE – CPA highly preferred

Requires prolonged sitting/standing, some bending, stooping, walking and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate appropriate reports or other information. Requires lifting papers/boxes and pushing/pulling up to 25 pounds occasionally. Work is performed in an office environment or hospital setting. Work may be stressful at times. Contact may involve dealing with angry or upset people. Staff must remain flexible and available to provide staffing assistance for any/all disaster or emergency situations.
